The leadership of the Nigerian Senate on Thursday night met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The high-level engagement focused on strengthening cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government as both institutions continue to address key national issues.

Politics Nigeria reports that the meeting was led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and brought together Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, and Senator Osita Bonaventure Izunaso, who represents Imo West.

The lawmakers held closed-door talks with President Tinubu, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Details of the meeting were made public by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele through a post on his official X account shortly after the engagement.

According to Bamidele, the discussions were centred on matters considered important to national development and the need for stronger collaboration between both arms of government.

He wrote, “Our meeting centered on matters of urgent public importance to further strengthen good governance through legislative intervention and collaborative efforts between the executive and the legislature.”

The Senate leader did not disclose the specific issues discussed behind closed doors. However, the meeting comes at a time when the National Assembly continues to consider major government proposals especially establishment of state police.

Although neither the Presidency nor the Senate released a detailed communiqué after the meeting, Bamidele’s comment indicated that the discussions were aimed at promoting good governance through stronger legislative support and sustained cooperation.

In a related development, President Tinubu had earlier urged members of the Senate to begin the process of amending the Constitution to make room for the establishment of state police as part of efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

Speaking during an engagement with senators at the Presidential Villa on February, the President stressed that the country’s security challenges require fresh constitutional solutions.

He told the lawmakers, “What I will ask for tonight is for you (Senators) to start thinking how best to amend the constitution to incorporate the State Police for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders, and free our children from fear.”

Tinubu also praised the cordial relationship between his administration and the National Assembly, saying cooperation between both arms of government has helped to advance major reforms.

According to him, “It is a good thing that we are working in harmony, we are looking forward to a country that evolves, a country that takes care of its citizens and protects all.”

The President further thanked senators for supporting key reforms introduced by his administration.

He said, “I have a lot of credit for bold reforms. Without your collaboration and inspiration, those reforms would not be possible. We are reformists together.”

Responding at the event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to working with the executive in advancing national development.

Akpabio also defended the relationship between both arms of government. He insisted that lawmakers were elected to work with the executive rather than engage in unnecessary confrontation.

He said, “When elected into the National Assembly, whether in the Senate or the House of Representatives, your constituents will not give you boxing gloves. It’s not a boxing tournament. You are there to work in a bipartisan manner for the interest of Nigeria.”

The Senate President maintained that cooperation between the executive and legislature remains necessary for effective governance while preserving the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.
