Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed government hospitals to provide free medical treatment to individuals injured in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, Wike confirmed that at least 10 people, including children, lost their lives, while 10 others sustained injuries during a food distribution event aimed at assisting the less privileged and elderly.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Wike assured the public that the FCT Administration would provide necessary medical care to the injured.

He also emphasized that from now on, individuals or organizations planning public palliative distributions, whether in the form of food or cash, must obtain police permission.

The minister expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, praying for the souls of the deceased and strength for their families to endure the loss.

He also praised the swift response of the police and other security agencies, stating that their quick action was commendable.
