According to the party, the termination of many state employees has reportedly left numerous families and dependents in precarious situations, compounding the already difficult economic challenges in the state.
The PDP attributes this hardship to the governor’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, blaming its mismanagement of the national economy.
Describing the dismissals as “callous, reckless, and unjust,” PDP spokesperson Chris Osa Nehikhare stated that the governor’s actions signal a potentially troubling future under his leadership.
Nehikhare stated that civil society groups, labor unions, and public servants across Edo State have also condemned the governor’s decision, calling it inhumane and insensitive.
In a statement to Naija News, the PDP questioned the governor’s intentions, saying, “This is totally condemnable and unacceptable. How can a governor begin to sack workers barely 24 hours after taking office? This action is a direct assault on the people of Edo State. It reminds us of the dark days of military rule when leaders dismissed civil servants with ‘immediate effect and automatic alacrity.’”
Nehikhare further questioned whether this move is a sign of what to expect from Okpebholo’s administration.
He said: “Is this harsh and inhumane action just the beginning? If this is how he starts his tenure, what hope is there for Edo State’s citizens in the coming months? How does an administration launch by forcing families into hardship?”
The PDP expressed concern that Okpebholo’s decisions may echo the suffering experienced nationally under the APC government, claiming, “Okpebholo seems to be bringing the same hardship to Edo State that the APC has inflicted on the country. We should brace for more harsh actions designed to impoverish the people further.”
