Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has openly condemned the Yoruba community for allegedly betraying the Ijaw and Niger Delta people despite their support for President Bola Tinubu in the recent 2023 election.
His remarks were conveyed in a widely circulated video, sparking significant public reactions.
In the video, Dokubo expressed regret for once doubting past decisions by former Ijaw leaders, including ex-Governor Melford Okilo, to align with the North.
Addressing the Ijaw people, he pledged to form a renewed alliance with the northern region, stating, “I apologize to our fathers, Melford Okilo and Prieye. They were not wrong to align with the North. From now on, we’ll strengthen ties with the North.”
In a passionate outcry, Dokubo lamented that the Ijaw community’s support has been disregarded by the Yoruba, labelling them “betrayers.”
“We risked our lives, voted, and did everything, and this is what we get?” he questioned, adding, “The Yoruba people do not value the Ijaw contribution. They betray us!”

Dokubo’s grievances follow President Tinubu’s recent decision to dismantle the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, a move seen by some as sidelining the region.
The President’s decision was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who announced the scrapping of both the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.
As Dokubo rallies for a lasting alliance with the North, his statements are already stirring intense debate, potentially reshaping the political dynamics between the Niger Delta and the Yoruba communities.
