Why Nigerians May End Up Buying Petrol ₦5,000 Per Litre – NLC

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Benson Upah, has warned that Nigerians may end up buying petrol for ₦5,000 per litre.

Upah stated this in an interview with Weekend Trust, amidst fuel scarcity and hike in price of petrol across the country.

He further stated that the recent increase runs contrary to the agreement the union reached with the federal government.

Speaking on the increase in petrol price Upah said, “I want to tell you something, what this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet, we may end up paying nothing less than ₦5,000 per liter for fuel in this country. We hope not to get there but if we get there, the decision will be left to Nigerians.”

Upah, who spoke on the Federal Government breaking promises on increasing the price of petrol as earlier reported by CityNews, said during discussions on a new minimum wage, the government proposed two options: either raise the minimum wage to ₦250,000 while allowing petrol prices to climb to between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000, or accept a wage increase to ₦62,000 and maintain the current fuel prices.

He expressed disappointment, stating that the latest price increase by President Bola Tinubu led government is a breach of trust.
