The Police in Abuja fired tear gas on Thursday to prevent #EndBadGovernance protesters from gaining entry into Eagles Square.
The protesters, who gathered in large numbers, had shunned an order by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) restricting the protest to the MKO Abiola Stadium.
The restriction order was issued by Justice Sylvanus Oriji on Wednesday, following an ex-parte application by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Despite the ruling, the protesters marched to Eagles Square, determined to make their voices heard at their initially planned venue.
As the crowd approached Eagles Square, police officers deployed tear gas, creating a thick wall of smoke that halted their progress.
The scene quickly became chaotic as protesters scampered to avoid the gas, with many struggling to breathe and find safety.
“It’s our right to protest peacefully, and what the police are doing is wrong,” one protester told Channels TV, expressing frustration and defiance. “We demand that the government listens to our cries and takes immediate action to address the issues we are raising.”
The protesters’ demands centre around the economic hardships and soaring inflation currently affecting the nation. The movement, dubbed ’10 days of rage’ and marked by the hashtag #EndBadGovernance, calls for significant reforms and immediate relief measures from the government.
Despite the heavy police presence and the use of tear gas, the protesters remain resolute.
“We are not here to cause trouble; we just want our voices to be heard.
“The government must meet our demands or face continued protests,” another demonstrator said
