The Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit says it has seized 497 more commercial motorcycles for allegedly contravening traffic laws in the state.
The Agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, made this known in a statement made available to journalists on Monday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 900 motorcycles were impounded for allegedly playing restricted roads in different parts of the state in January.
Abdulraheem said the latest operations covered areas such as Doyin Bus Stop, on Orile/Iganmu Road, Alakija, Iyana Iba, Igbo-Elerin, Festac Link Bridge and Igando.
He also said that the agency was decisive in its operation to ensure public safety and uphold the laid down traffic rules and regulations on the state’s highways.
According to him, activities of commercial motorcyclists, especially along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, are reckless due to the nonchalant attitude of the riders on the axis.
“Okada operators here are the cause of major accidents and a big threat to the security architecture of the state along this route, especially the ones you see facing oncoming vehicles directly on one-way.
“It is complete madness and I recommend anyone caught in the act to be subjected to psychiatric evaluation,” he said.
Abdulraheem further stated that the agency achieved a remarkable record of seizures during the operation.
“This signals a clear message to motorcyclists that enforcement measures will be rigorously implemented in all nooks and crannies of the state,” the spokesperson said.
He reiterated the importance of compliance with traffic regulations and warned riders to desist from operating on restricted routes immediately.
“Failure to adhere to these regulations will result in the impoundment of motorcycles and possible jail term,” he warned. (NAN)
