In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria has earned the title of the world’s fastest-growing country for pizza consumption, with an astonishing 1,222% surge in pizza orders delivered via the Glovo app.
The data, reflecting the pizza consumption habits of Nigerians in 2023, has placed the country at the forefront of global pizza enthusiasm.
Chicken-based pizzas took the lead in 2023, constituting 44% of all pizza deliveries.
The consumption landscape witnessed notable shifts in preferences, with pizzas featuring beef and sausages experiencing an extraordinary surge of 14,471% and 4,141%, respectively.
Regarding pizza sizes, ‘Large’ pizzas emerged as the clear favourites, commanding 45% of total orders. Following closely were ‘Regular or Medium’ and ‘Small’ sizes, making up 28% and 27% of orders, respectively.
The peak in pizza orders occurred on October 28th, 2023, when Nigerians placed four times more pizza orders than the average Saturday in that year.
Lagos dominated the pizza orders, capturing a substantial 57% share, while Abuja claimed the record for the most expensive pizza order, totalling N136,240.
The recent surge in pizza orders indicates Nigeria’s growing appetite for the famous culinary delight.
