Osimhen has won the first Serie A title for Napoli in 33 years.

The Publisher Nigeria reports that Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, was on target on Thursday night, May 4, 2023, as Napoli were crowned 2022/2023 Serie A champions also known as the Scudetto.

This online news platform understands the masked 24-year-old former Lille striker scored the equalizer in their 1-1 draw at Udinese as Napoli became Serie A champions for the first time in 33 years since late Diego Maradona won it for the Gli Azzurri (The Blues).

Sandi Lovric had given Udinese the lead at the 13 minutes as Napoli looked set to delay their title celebrations again but Osimhen, on a three-match goal drought, equalized for Napoli in the 52nd minute with a well-placed shot from a loose ball in the area to score his 22nd league goal of the season.

Osimhen, who topped the league’s goalscoring chart, became the African with the highest number of goals in a Serie A season, beating the 21 goals scored by Samuel Eto’o for Inter Milan in the 2010/2011 season.

The masked striker’s equalizer is also his 46th goal in Serie A in his third season, equalling the record for the all-time African highest goalscorer in the league held by George Weah.

Meanwhile, the Publisher Nigeria reports that the draw means Napoli have an unassailable 80 points from 33 matches, 16 points ahead of second-placed Lazio with five matches left to play in the season.

In the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium the scenes were epic

Napoli haven’t won a league title since 1990, when Diego Maradona captured his and the club’s second of a legendary career.

And in their stadium that now bears his name, fans had packed out the 54,726-seater to see the trophy come back down south for only the third time.

In Udine, the home team’s black and white stripes could barely be seen, with the stadium packed out with the blue of travelling supporters who turned it into a de-facto home ground.

Preparations for the title win had been beginning for weeks, seeing a graveyard built for Napoli’s 19 Serie A opponents.

Meanwhile the park near Mount Vesuvius had to put up extra measures to stop fans celebrating around the volcano.

Fans rushed onto the pitch following the full-time whistle to surround the players as their 33-year wait for the Scudetto came to an end.

Supporters stormed the Udinese pitch to celebrate

And some of the travelling Napoli faithful could also be seen trying to rip off some of the player’s shirts and shorts.

Napoli Boss Luciano Spalletti was also mobbed by supporters who wrapped a blue and white Napoli scarf around him.
