Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has charged all 2023 presidential candidates including Bola Tinubu of the (All Progressives Congress – APC), Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party – PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party and others, to be open to Nigerians about the state of the nation.

While appearing live on Channel Television’s Political Paradigm programme on Monday, the economic policy expert and activist said politicians, especially those contesting the number one political position in the country must tell the citizens the truth about the current state of the nation rather than rushing to make promises.

Speaking on the forthcoming 2023 general elections, the former minister said regardless of who emerges president next year, immediate results may not be achieved in four years, because of the level of decay in the system.

According to her, an immediate result may be unachievable but what matters is having a President who understands the problems that need to be solved and has ideas of how to go about the problems.

Ezekwesili said: “Candidates who are running for elections must tell electorates the bitter truth. The bitter truth is that the country is not in a place for any President to immediately deliver results.

“What matters is that you have a President who understands the problems that need to be solved and has an idea of how to go about solving it.”

She added: “Any candidate who is promising instant results after the 2023 elections is not being fair to you. So it is important that we understand that citizens must be ready for the work ahead because it is going to require everybody working together to make this happen.”

The Publisher Nigeria reports that the 2023 general elections begin with the presidential and National Assembly polls on February 25, 2023.
