A Nigerian journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, has received criticisms from Nigerians for referring to the Osun State Governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke as “intellectually empty”.
This online news platform had reported earlier that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, Ademola Adeleke, was declared the winner of the Osun governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s electoral umpire.
The INEC returning officer for the state, Toyin Ogundipe, announced the result of the Osun election 2022 on Sunday morning, July 17, 2022.
“I declare that Adeleke Jackson Nurudeen Ademola of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected,” Ogundipe said.
PDP’s Adeleke secured 403, 371 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 375,027 votes.
The PDP candidate won 17 LGAs while the incumbent governor secured victory in 13 LGAs. Kehinde Atanda of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) placed a distant third with 10,104 votes while Yusuf Lasun of the Labour Party (LP) had 2729 votes.
Reacting to the emergence of Adeleke as the new governor of Osun State, southwest Nigeria, Fisayo took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, where he wrote that “What has happened in Osun is what I’d call ‘rotational motion’. Oyetola, the non-performing governor-puppet of the grandest godfather of Nigerian politics kicked out, but for who? Intellectually empty Adeleke who will dance the next 4 years away? 5 steps forward, 6 backward!”
