The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Abubakar Ishaku, over possession of bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in Abuja.
The police commissioner of the FCT, CP Sunday Babaji, disclosed this at the command headquarters in Abuja, on Saturday.
He said the suspect was arrested by the police team of the Dutse-Alhaji division while conveying the exhibit in a vehicle.
He said the suspect, who hails from Kankara LGA of Katsina State, had been on the command’s wanted list of drug peddlers.
He said the suspect, who took to his heels upon sighting the police, was re-arrested on July 14, 2022, following painstaking investigation. He said 20 bags of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, were recovered.
CP Babaji Sunday, who said the suspect would be handed over to the NDLEA, reassured residents of the FCT of his unflinching commitment to bringing crime and criminality to the barest minimum in the territory.
He noted that the abuse of drugs and other substances is a major factor in the perpetration of most crimes and criminality.
“Hence, the command will not relent in taking the fight against drugs and substance abuse to its core, and root it out while we are working in synergy with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” he said.
