Two Operators Rake In N534bn From Calls, Data

Nigerians spent N533.58bn on calls and data according to the analysis of Airtel and MTN’s financial results.

According to Airtel, voice revenue was N97.61bn in the quarter ended June 30, 2021, while revenue from data was N70.13bn.

MTN did not release a report for the quarter. But in its half year report, it reported voice revenue of N487.68bn and data revenue of N228.48bn.

In its Q1 report, it reported a voice revenue of N244.62bn and data revenue of N105.69bn. Deducting the quarter one report from the half year figure gave a voice revenue of N243.06bn and data revenue of N122.79bn as Q2 figures.

Globacom and 9mobile do not have quarterly released reports. But according to industry statistics on the Nigerian Communications Commission’s website, MTN and Airtel have 66.39 per cent of market share of mobile subscribers.

According to the NCC’s ‘2020 Subscriber/Network Data Report’, 96.42 per cent of national outgoing calls was on MTN and Airtel.

According to Airtel, the overall average revenue per user per month among its subscribers grew by 39.7 per cent in the quarter, driven by a 17 per cent voice growth and 18 per cent growth in data.

The company said that its voice revenue for the quarter grew by 28.0 per cent because of voice ARPU growth of 29.3 per cent.

It added that its data revenue grew by 48.8 per cent because of data ARPU growth of 41.5 per cent as data consumption per customer grew to 3.8GB per month from 2.7GB per customer.

According to MTN, its voice revenue grew by 13 per cent because there was an 11.8 per cent increase in traffic.

The company added that its data consumption grew by 48.3 per cent because of the increase in usage from its existing subscriber base.

MTN said its data traffic rose by 83 per cent year-on-year, and that its 4G network now covers 65.1 per cent of the population.
